In the Midst of Hell, Not Hell

Stories of life and hope in the Holy Land with Wafa Farid Musleh, President, Holy Land Living Stones Association, Bethlehem, Palestine, Fr. Ramzi Sidawi, Guardian at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America, and Hosam Abu Sini, Oncologist, Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, moderated by Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, Permanent Observer of the Holy See at the U.N.

In very few places on earth, hope has been challenged more nowadays than in the Holy Land. The wounds are so deep and complex that it seems that hell is already there. However, as Italian author Italo Calvino wrote, ”There are two ways to escape suffering hell. The first is easy for many: accept hell and become such a part of it that you can no longer see it. The second is risky and demands constant vigilance and apprehension: seek and learn to recognize who and what, in the midst of hell, are not hell, then make them endure, give them space.” Giving space to what is not hell in the midst of hell is what the Encounter intended to do by inviting people who could recount stories of life and hope in this tortured region of the world.
