Gerard Brungardt
Dr. Brungardt is Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita. He divides his time between teaching medical students and working in the resident outpatient internal medicine clinic. His professional interests include Professional Identity Formation, Wellness, Humanities, and Bioethics.
A native Kansan, Dr. Brungardt grew up on a farm near Abilene. He attended Benedictine College in Atchison and the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City for both medical school and an internal medicine residency.
Dr. Brungardt practiced internal medicine for 10 years at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Wichita as an associate professor of internal medicine for the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita. In addition to his clinical and teaching responsibilities, he was associate chief of staff for ambulatory care. He then served as medical director for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice for 14 years. This position allowed him to combine his interest and expertise in clinical care, end-of-life care, ethics in medicine, and teaching while providing patient and family-centered care for the dying and their families. He remains actively involved in teaching on a variety of clinical and community levels.
Dr. Brungardt is board certified in Hospice & Palliative Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Internal Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine as well as the American College of Physicians.
He completed a Licentiate (BeL) degree in bioethics at the Regina Apostolorum in Rome in 2008.
Dr. Brungardt and his lovely wife Cassandra are the parents of 10 children and have 9 grandchildren. They are members of the Church of the Magdalen and active in the ecclesial movement Communion and Liberation.
