The millennials’ search for collective identity has gradually been curated over the past several years. It is comprised of filtered Instagram posts and incessant tweets. It is a search for identity played out over the Internet and iPhones, showing the world all that we can do. We are defined by our desire for great things, success, to change the world, to be unique. But in front of this desire, many millennials discover themselves discouraged. The glitzy image posted on our Facebook wall seems ephemeral, and once alone we are disappointed. Life is not what we expected, what was promised to us. The difficulties of life are harder to face than we thought. But this chasm between our desire for greatness and the frustration of reality is precisely the starting point for finding our true identity; here we are forced to confront the question of what gives meaning to life.
The Millennial Experience is the result of several months of work completed by young adults across the country. In order to discover the identity of our generation, to find what gives us meaning, we have had to move from the question of “who are we?” to “who am I?” What makes me exceptional?
