The Power of Language
A presentation on the nature of language and the danger of ideologies with Andrea Moro, professor of general linguistics at the Institute of Superior Studies, Italy, and Marguerite Peeters, director of the Institute for Intercultural Dialogue Dynamics, Brussels, moderated by Stephen Lewis, professor of English, Franciscan University of Steubenville
Language is currently in the spotlight. Apart from the challenges posed by generative artificial intelligence and the need to identify what is uniquely human, language is being increasingly manipulated to influence or even create or impose a certain worldview. Dr. Moro will first address how language is a defining feature of our human identity and is intrinsically connected to how we experience reality. Dr. Peeters will then show how changing the vocabulary can have a profound impact, greater than we normally think, on how we relate to people and things. She will also address how a certain ideological use of language has evolved in the last decades and why.
