The Virgin of Guadalupe and Our Identity
A presentation with Claudia Mena, economist
In a country where the conflict between the native component and the conquistadores is still very much alive, Ms. Mena's presentation will show how the event of the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe is at the root of the identity of the Mexican people. The apparition happened very shortly after the arrival of the Spaniards and the consequent conflicts with the natives. Our Lady proposes herself as a mestizo, offering to Mexicans their new identity as a result of the fusion of the two cultures, where the true components of both are saved, protected, and actually enhanced. Claudia offers a detailed study of the characteristics of the Aztec religious sense, cultural values, and social achievements as well as the enriching values introduced by the Spaniards.
